"What would an ocean be without a monster lurking in the dark? It would be like sleep without dreams."
Kela has heard tales of mermaids that supposedly inhabit the waters around her island, but she has never believed them. While diving with her father, she discovers a box, decrepit and forgotten. Hidden inside is a comb unlike any she has seen. On an impulse, she touches it and soon learns the power it holds to grant wishes, but at a price. When what was lost is not returned, fury from the depths threatens to rip away all she has.
My middle grade fantasy, Dark Tide, was written during NaNoWriMo 2013. I was inspired by my West Indian heritage to write a mermaid tale with a dark twist. I found representation for this novel and am now represented by Lindsay Davis Auld of Writers Houses. Visit my Pinterest inspiration board for more images.
As the land turns to dust, 12-year-old Jani struggles to free a mysterious girl from a hidden tower and unravel the mysteries of their shared past. To find the truth and heal the kingdom, she must overcome griot magic and powerful forces seeking to stop her.
Kingdom of Dust is a middle grade fantasy inspired by the kingdoms of medieval West Africa. Written during NaNoWriMo 2015, I am currently working on revisions of the manuscript.
