The Mesmerist follows 13-year-old Jessamine Grace as she navigates the supernatural underworld of Victorian England. She discovers she is a “mesmerist” who has the power to read thoughts and even communicate with the spirit world. Jess eventually teams up with others with special abilities in "The League of Ravens" as they try to unravel the secrets of a mysterious plague sweeping the city and battle with the dark powers of Mephisto, an evil order of sorcerers.
Like The Lie Tree, that I shared about on the blog last year, The Mesmerist is also historical fantasy. Combining fantasy elements such as faeries, supernatural abilities, and necromancers with the gritty urban setting and historical details of Victorian London made for a fun and enjoyable read. Smith is adept at creating a spine-tingling mood through careful language and imagery. Both Hoodoo and The Mesmerist would be great for the kid that likes scary stories with more than a touch of magic.
